John Sherman Greenwell, 44, who was being housed at the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown, had to be rushed to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital last week, where he stayed for several days before being discharged on Friday.

Once he was back in custody, Greenwell reportedly suffered a second medical emergency, was evaluated by prison staff, and taken back to the hospital, where he later died, according to officials.

Greenwell’s checkered history includes several arrests, including multiple assault, attempted murder, and other offenses. He had been held at the facility without bond.

Following his death, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office’s Criminal Investigations Division will investigate the death, while an administrative probe has also been launched into the actions before and after the medical emergency.
